The Banteay Srei temple probably is one that is much different from the structures of the Khmer era because it is much smaller in scale when compared to the other temples in the area. The temple was constructed in the 10th century. It is also different in that this is the only temple that is not constructed by the kings. It was constructed by two courtiers by the name Vishnukumara and Yajnavaraha. The Temple Enclosures The Banteay Srei temple is famous for the most intricate carvings which can be found in any of the Khmer temples. The carvings are still clearly visible. These contain many scenes from the epic Ramayana and other episodes from Hindu mythology. The temple has four enclosures including a moat. The moat which is in the third enclosure is dry now and there is a causeway across it which leads to the Eastern and Western entrance towers. These entrances are guarded by statues of majestic lions. The second enclosure contains two libraries which have fine carvings of mythological stories along their walls. The details in the carvings show how much Hinduism had spread to these areas of the world. The Three Sanctuaries The three sanctuaries are contained inside the first and innermost enclosure. The middle tower contains the most important deity of the temple which is Sri Tribhuvanamaheswara. There are two other sanctuaries which are dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Apart from this connection to Indian mythology the architecture of the Banteay Srei temple is also closest to the Indian style that you can find in this region. The Many Names Of The TempleThe Banteay Srei temple is known by many names. Popular names for the temple are “lady temple”, the “pink temple” and the “tiny temple”. All these names come from the size and color of the temple. The temple is constructed using pink limestone and hence the name “pink temple”. People attribute the other two names to the size of the temple which is much smaller compared to the other Khmer temples. The name Banteay Srei itself means “Citadel of Women” or “Citadel of Beauty”. This name could have originated from the in-numerous carvings of goddesses which are carved on the walls of the temple. How To Reach Banteay Srei? The temple is located around 20 km from the Angkor Wat complex. The distance from Siem Reap is around 30 km. You can reach the temple by hiring a tuk-tuk which is the best way to get around in these places. The temple can also be reached by taxi.
